Our kitchen!

Hello!
It's now the weekend for me {Friday is my study day} so this morning I finally got around to snapping some pictures of our kitchen.
Like the rest of our house, the kitchen is all original 1940's. What does this mean? Well, it means no dishwasher... narrow benches... and a zillion small cupboards.

Have a peek at the befores before I start {afters are down further} :

{the cupboards were a mess and had no real handles}
{these net curtains made me a little nauseus}
{the cupboards were orangey-brown inside}

As usual, we have not changed anything structurally, and there is still no dishwasher, narrow benches, and a zillion cupboards. What we have done is repaint the cupboards inside and out, painted the walls, put new wooden handles on everything (to go with the native timber throughout the house), installed blinds, and thrown in a lot of cuteness and colour.

We would still love to be able to change it more (a dishwasher!) but here it is today:
{the best thing about a 1940's house is the high ceilings and old wood}

Before I moved in here (right after our wedding) I always wanted a tea cupboard, where you just keep tea and coffee all neatly laid out... (What, that's not how you get your kicks?)

 We also replaced the horrible old net curtain and hung some timber slatted blinds, along with a little shelf to hold spices etc. This shelf was actually mine when I was a kid and used to be covered in 'Sylvanian families'... don't tell.

We keep a few memories on the fridge ..

And some vintage tins and our cookbooks on top of it. Two of these tins are really old tobacco tins from my grandma, that she kept little tubes of oil paints in and gave to me when I got into art and painting.

See that "blackboard" on the far wall? It was a super quick DIY - I had an empty picture frame that was very old, filled it with black card, and bought a liquid chalk pen (about $5) to write on it. Waaay easier than painting an actual chalkboard, and much less messy to use.

It's great for shopping lists, or a quote, message, scribble...
{From the 'famous' love chapter in the Bible: nothing matters unless you act with love}
Add a couple of things left over from our garden wedding: the pink lemonade sign I painted and straws leftover from the event.

 Phew, that was a lot of pics!
Just for fun, I thought I'd share one last photo of my favourite kitchen items - I love baking and these tools make it way more fun!

{measuring cups, cookie cutter, lemon squeeze}

Thank you so much for coming on our kitchen tour! I'm pretty sure it's all messed up and covered in dishes again by now...

What do you do to make your kitchen look pretty? And who's with me on the baking love?
:)

  9. Wow!!!! It looks SOOO good! The new paint on your cupboards and wooden handles made such a huge difference! Same with the blinds! (I am such a sucker for natural wood and white together.) And even though you didn't change them, I am loving your countertops. What is that material on the side with the sink? Zinc? I am greatly inspired and totally wishing I lived in a place that I could fix up!

  13. Hi Amy! I have arrived here via Live Laugh Rowe - I love what you have done with your kitchen - it looks nice, bright and cheery. When I clicked through to have a look, I actually thought that it looked like a 'kiwi style' kitchen and I am pleasantly surprised to be right! I am a (new) NZ blogger as well :-) I look forward to following along here with you.
